So far.....

A letter I wrote and am lazy to edit to fit my blog. More details in future

Dear All,

Hi again! New Year’s Eve and I’m typing a letter to you instead of going to the countdown at Orchard Road. Isn’t that nice of me? Just kidding, I don’t want to go to Orchard Road anyway. It’s gonna be too crowded for my liking. Anyway let me commence to my news straight away. Before that, a big THANK YOU to all who have emailed me so far! Thank you so much, it’s nice to read letters from home.

Well……I guess I should start my long letter from the day I arrived in Singapore. I left on Tuesday, the 29th of December 2004. My flight from KLIA departed at 8.00 am… so my family sent me off at 6 am in the morning. Oh and en route to the airport I received an unexpected call from a friend of mine…and quite a few smses from my teacher Pn Sahariah and other friends. I must say I am rather proud of myself that I managed to find my way to the teminal….even if it was with a few tips and pointers from my dad. Elena and I joked that my dad is in the airport so often that he knows it like his own home. On the flight I practically slept from take off to touch down so I had no idea what was going on. When I arrived my uncle and 2 cousins picked me up and sent me to my hostel. There, Xin Hua and Li Hua kindly helped me unload and clean up before taking me out for lunch. After lunch they sent me back again….and I faced the boredom of having nothing to do at all. I wandered around and made friends with my room mates etc etc etc. At night, a pleasant surprise, the seniors of Anderson Junior College (my JC in fact) had put up a nice powerpoint to welcome us. I laughed a lot during their presentation, especially when they featured the sleeping pictures! I also had my first experience of ‘Roll Call’….bleh. No choice in the matter anyhow.

Next day, Wednesday, 30th December, I had Orientation at Victoria JC. Along with all the other ‘Scholars’ (can’t get used to this word) I think there were about 400 in all we were divided into teams and taken through a series of activities. Lovely really. I was in probably one of the biggest groups, Group 9, and we decided to call ourselves ‘The Cows’! (Don’t laugh, its nice being a Cow) Our Cheer included a nice long ‘moo’ so I think I’ve had quite enough ‘moo’ing to last me the year. I met 2 of my old friends here, and have made heaps of other friends. I hope I can remember all their names in due time! We got back from Orientation exhausted. Nonetheless, our seniors in AJ (Anderson JC) asked us if we were interested in a trip to our JC. One of them was just back from organizing the orientation and came along, even if he must have been tired. My seniors are rather a nice lot. In the end most of my peers went up as they were too tired, and a relatively small group headed for JC. Its not very near…..I have to walk and take the MRT…but I heard its nearer than Anglo-Chinese JC…in which some of my hostel mates are placed so I’m not complaining….yet. Just for info, I was told AJ is the 2nd smallest JC in Singapore. All the better. It’s still bigger than SSAAS anyway. When we juniors got back, dinner time was over, but the caterers kindly allowed us to go inside and dish ourselves some food. The food here isn’t superb but it isn’t plastic and inedible, so I guess my mission to lose weight is going to be a run away success! Hehe…especially with the Physical Education in Singapore. All I can say is…I’d better be prepared for the worst.

Last day for this letter, today, 31st December, New Year’s Eve!! Went to MOE this morning….and had a great workshop under Mr Ronald Chua. MOE is on Nort Buono Vista drive, and we were actually expected to get back by ourselves!! North Buono Vista is very far from Oldham Hall in my opinion, since I took 1 hour to get back! 7 girls from my hostel taking the MRT…and changing stations twice hoping to beat the clock to get back in time for our Hostel Orientation!! Argh!! Bad day Bad day!! We hadn’t even eaten lunch, but thankfully, the office arranged for some to be packed for us when we got back and informed them. Oh, and here’s a cute scene for you to imagine. This morning, MOE distributed welcome packs to the scholars, in which were items including a notebook, highlighters, pens, some biscuits and a dark blue umbrella!! On our way back from MOE, it actually began to rain. So all seven pf us extracted out umbrellas and walked to our hostel from Newton MRT station. It must have been an interesting sight, all the umbrellas are identical! Seven dark blue umbrellas bobbing in a row. Teehee. Anyway we got back for hostel orientation and after that I came up and flopped on the bed. Made some calls, received a call….had dinner. Nothing else interesting. I guess I’ll be celebrating New Year alone. Nah I’m too lazy to countdown in here. I’ll just sleep!!

Okay, my very detailed news over and done with (I thought I’d NEVER get down to doing this) now is to my hostel info! If you wanna write to me, please address it to

I share my room with 3 other girls, 2 from Malaysia and one from Thailand. Our room is right next to the glass door leading to the lift lobby, but we’re directly opposite the toilet. It’s not very far though, I guess our room is in a very nice spot. However, I can’t bring visitors up to my room. There’s the dining hall downstairs and a lovely upright grand piano there. One of these days I’ll go scout for the music room. My hostel also has a gorgeous swimming pool on its grounds, a billiard room, tennis courts and ping pong tables. Nice place really. Hmm…I think this letter is QUITE long enough so I’ll just sign off here with a Happy New Year to you, may 2005 be a year filled with joy, peace and good health for you!

Love,
Christine

'I dreamt that I was composing a symphony....I had gone to my table to begin writing it down when I suddenly reflected: "If I write this part I shall let myself be carried on to write the rest. The natural tendency of my mind to expand the material is sure to make it very long...When the symphony is finished I shall be weak enough to allow my copyist to copy it out, and thus immediately incur a debt of 1,000 or 1,200 francs. Once the parts are copied I shall be harassed by the temptation to have the work performed; I shall give a concert in which, as is sure to be the case in these days, the receipts will barely cover half the expenses; I shall lose what I have not got; I shall want the necessaries of life for my poor invalid, and shall have no money for either myself or for my son's keep on board ship!"...I threw down my pen saying, "Bah! I shall have forgotten the symphony tomorrow." But the following night the obstinate symphony again presented itself...'
