SPM English Continuous Writing

Question (e) Clothes

"Jeans, t-shirts, slacks, mini skirts, belts, blouses, tank tops, cargo pants, jerseys, shorts, cardigans and coats! I spin around in a circle, my cup of happiness filled to the overflowing. Where am I? In the clothes section of a shopping complex of course! A haven for clothers lovers such as me! I love clothes!"

This is probably what most women feel when shopping for clothes. Clothes, or items we use to cover our bodies, have come a long way since the evolution of man. Our Ice Age ancestors, draped in animal skins and hides soon learnt the art of sewing and weaving, and once cotton was discovered, well, clothes became an essential part of our lives. Centuries later, clothes were no longer just a basic necessity. In the 18th century, women strutted like peacocks in gowns all colours of the rainbow, adorned with feathers, trinklets and whatnot, the fashion industry had finally exploded in our human lives. Strangely enough, women's clothes seem to have undergone more changes than men's clothing, and though surcoats and collar points no longer prevail in men's wardrobes, men seem to have stuck to shirts, pants and coats for the past century.

The history of clothes would certainly be able to take up a few paragraphs, but we should wonder, "Why all the fuss and bother over pieces of cloth sewn together?" Humans put such importance on clothes, that the function of clothes does not lie on the reason of protecting our bodies from the elements alone. Now, in the 21st century ..... (means of expression , John Kerry)

Paragraph 4 - personalities, cultural backgorund, impression

Paragraph 5 - fun - dressing up - party - clothes spell variety too

Given man's obsession with clothes, no wonder the fashion arena is such a lucarative industry these days. Since human beings come in all shapes and sizes, clothes come in all designs and patterns too. I, however, do not really follow the latest fashion trends as faithfully as most of my peers, as I do not feel the need or inclination to do so. Fashions change, just as the seasons change each year. I love clothes, but in my opinion, it is better to buy something that can be worn all the time, and not be deemer out of fashin after one short season. Let all the rich and wealthy spalsh and squander their money on outfits they wear only once, I have neither the means not wish to do so.

Clothes. They play such a huge role in our daily lives, and make up a part of what it means to be human. After all, you don't see a zebra prancing in the middle of the African grasslands adorned in a hula skirt do you? Well, looks like the year 2004 is drawing near its end, with Deepavali and Hari Raya just around the corner. As soon as this public examination is over, I am hitting the local shopping malls, for it's the sale season! With offers and discounts galore, well, all I can say is, look out clothes, here I come!

'I dreamt that I was composing a symphony....I had gone to my table to begin writing it down when I suddenly reflected: "If I write this part I shall let myself be carried on to write the rest. The natural tendency of my mind to expand the material is sure to make it very long...When the symphony is finished I shall be weak enough to allow my copyist to copy it out, and thus immediately incur a debt of 1,000 or 1,200 francs. Once the parts are copied I shall be harassed by the temptation to have the work performed; I shall give a concert in which, as is sure to be the case in these days, the receipts will barely cover half the expenses; I shall lose what I have not got; I shall want the necessaries of life for my poor invalid, and shall have no money for either myself or for my son's keep on board ship!"...I threw down my pen saying, "Bah! I shall have forgotten the symphony tomorrow." But the following night the obstinate symphony again presented itself...'
- Berlioz writing about a nightmare he had during the 1850s
